Topic: storage near (but not on) cedar?

The big closet in my new place, the most likely place to store my pu'er, is lined with what I believe is cedar. It's not really strong smelling in there, but there is a slight cedary aroma. If it's relevant, the closet doors are slatted, so there's some airflow (I suspect this isn't ideal in general, in terms of being able to control humidity).

My question is... if I store the tea, not ON the cedar, as it would be in a cigar humidor or something, but on wire shelving in the closet (most likely not in a cardboard box or other container), will it pick up too much of the cedar? For now, I've stuffed it in the bottom of my Zekova wood tea tansu, which doesn't have too much of a wood smell; however, there isn't enough space to adequately separate different ages of tea in there, and more generally, there isn't enough room for all my tea down there, so I need another solution pretty quickly. If I used cardboard or plastic boxes, would that be sufficient to isolate the tea from the smells?

I may end up getting a custom cabinet made, but I'd rather not if I can avoid it.

Re: storage near (but not on) cedar?

I'm obviously not the expert you're looking for, but I would think that it would have a lot to do with how strong the smell is. Maybe put an open box of baking soda in the closet as well?

Re: storage near (but not on) cedar?

The smell isn't super strong - at first I couldn't even tell for sure it was cedar. But it's there.

I would be reluctant to put tea in a closet lined with cedar. It would, however, be a great idea to start testing it out now. maybe you could put a piece of not so good tea in their and try it in a month or two to see if it had absorbed any scent.

That was Jason's suggestion too. I don't think the smell is strong enough that the tea would absorb it in a way you'd be able to taste after a couple of months.

You'd be surprised.  I stored some tea in a woody smelling cabinet.  A few months later, the tea smelled woody.

Have you put the test piece in the closet yet? I will ask you in two months if it tastes like cedar.

I have some wet stored shu cakes in there (maybe 2 / 2.5), as well as a really nice older cake that I've been (temporarily) too lazy to find a better home for and need to move out very quickly. But other than that, not yet. I might try to put one sheng cake in there at some point.
